Giving thanks

It has happened again: the holiday season is upon us in just 4 days. I am always amazed at how quickly the time shifts from the first signs of fall to the coming of Thanksgiving. I love this time of year, particularly the traditions that have developed since Americans have begun celebrating this holiday over 300 years ago.  And Thanksgiving has two special qualities that I have always loved, even as a small child: all people, regardless of religious affiliation, can join together in the giving of thanks and more incredibly, this holiday is not about consumerism.

Rather this  day is  devoted to sharing the bounty of the ‘harvest’, which of course in our modern world, takes on a somewhat different , yet related form: we tend to ‘pull out the stops’ and pay homage to traditional dishes, as well as branching out to try new ones. The tables are laden with roasted turkeys, stuffings(of all kinds), mashed and sweet potatoes, soft warm rolls, green bean casseroles, cranberry sauce, gravy and of course what would this feast be without an assortment of freshly baked pies(pumpkin, apple and pecan, to name a few)? As we have become more health-conscious, many of us have added Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, whole grain breads and fresh fruit desserts to the menu. But irregardless, this is a day that focuses on celebrating one another in family and friendship and for taking the time to give thanks for the plentitude of blessings in our lives.

I would like to take the time, this week, to offer my thanks for:

~my family, friends, health,  dog, home,  work, books, music, art, personal freedom, the stars, the ocean, the mountains, my community, the beautiful state in which I live, my country, my faith, my sense of wonder and yearning for knowledge, my love of food and cooking, the joy of having a body that works and can try new things and my awareness that I can and should be thankful for all that I have in my life. I am also thankful for all of you who have taken the time to read our blog…and to join in our conversations.

A spectacular November morning on the Oregon coast: a perfect time to be grateful

I hope that this time holds special meaning for you as well and that you have much to be grateful for. As always , we would love to hear from you: what are YOU thankful for?

Wishing you a bountiful feast with those you love and hold dear.
