Almost halfway there!!

Congrats to all of you who have made it this far on our cleanse. Hopefully you have noticed some positive changes and these are enough to keep you going! I have heard from quite a few of you and this is what you have told me so far:

“My pants are looser and I have lost belly fat.”  “I have lost 3 # already!” ” My skin looks amazing and my sleep has been wonderful.” 

” I miss sugar but I am craving it less and less.”   ” I miss my evening wine: I am getting a little grumpy but I am determined to hang in there because this is my second time and I remember how great I felt afterwards.”    ” This feels so empowering: I love it!”

I promised to share a few recipes to keep things fun and interesting(hopefully you have discovered some of your own: don’t forget to share!!)

In Whole Living magazine, Jan/Feb issue, they had an article, “Start Fresh” , which I just received yesterday. Great minds think alike, yes? They are launching  a 3 week cleanse which is quite a bit stricter than ours but full of terrific information and recipes. I tried one of the beverage ones last night and I loved it, so here goes:

“Golden Elixir” (great name): Boil up water, fill up your mug with hot water, add 1 Tblsp of fresh lemon juice, 1/8 tsp each of turmeric and ground ginger(you can always use fresh of course), a smidge of cayenne(or more if you like it spicy) and honey. I also added some truvia to make it a little sweeter. Drink a cup of this in the morning and at night. This is a powerful drink, loaded with anti-inflammatories and immune boosters, great for your liver and your adrenals. And I found it incredibly satisfying at the end of the day, when I often pour myself a glass of lovely red wine; this was a perfect substitute.

For lunches and dinners, try roasting up a bunch of vegetables in advance so that they are ready when your appetite strikes. Simply heat your oven up to 425 degrees. Cut up some veggies of your choosing(cauliflower, beets,broccoli, carrots, Brussel sprouts, turnips, parsnips, green/red/yellow peppers): toss them lightly in some olive oil and a dusting of salt( I use Kosher or a  gourmet type of salt like pink Himalayan), place in large roasting pan and cook for 35-40 minutes, tossing and turning them every 10-15 minutes . Cook until they turn a nice golden brown or to your liking. Serve alone or with quinoa(pronounced keen-wah), brown rice, whole grain pasta and a protein of your choice. Last night I had them with quinoa and a chicken skewer. I also love them cold for a snack(but I love vegetables). Try a bunch of different veggies: eggplant and onions are also tasty so experiment! You will probably find that this is your new favorite way to eat vegetables. I know my family did!

    This is my first monitored cleanse. It feels easier than I thought it would. Great way to do veggies is to steam them with herbs. No fat issues! I did sliced sweet potatoes last night, then sprinkled with Truvia, nutmeg and cinnamon. Served with pork loin slices.
    Very good! So far have lost 2 lbs. Doing the gym every other day due to arthritis issues. 30 min elyptical and 15-20 min weights.

    • Thanks Joss! sounds like you have found some nice substitutions for your usual foods. Turmeric/curcumin and MSM are both excellent supplements for arthritis(there are many!) so sprinkle turmeric on your eggs/veggies/etc and/or take Curcumin and MSM daily and see if you notice a difference in how your joints feels(it can take several weeks to months) plus weight loss is always the best way to take some of the stress off of your joints.

    How were you doing all this and still up a mountain? Do u have a twin?

    • Too funny! I have been accused of that before but no, that is me several months ago. That was one beautiful sunny warm day in Oregon….today is sunny as well, alas it is in the 30’s so no hiking for me today. It is wonderful to look back on days like that and know that in several months, we can start hiking again. Tennis(indoor) anyone??? or reading a book by the fire? Winter has its own charm. Stay warm and hang in there!

    We are still on the cleanse and although most of the time it is a piece of cake (HAH!), I am feeling a bit deprived….not sure from what as I rarely drink alcohol and do not drink wine at all and have bee decaffeinated for years. Not sleeping well at all. Larry is struggling a bit as he does drink coffee and LOVES his wine at night followed by something sweet. We will stick with it 100% and hope that in the end, we do feel and see a change. Just love you for doing this but when you do come to the city…..it’s wine and pizza time. Love Susan

    • That is wonderful that you are sticking to it! Do try the recipe for the hot lemon drink that I posted yesterday: the recipe from Whole Living called Golden Elixir. Actually this hot beverage is a variation on a theme that many cultures/cleanses use to help you feel energized and to boost your liver and adrenals. You might go easy on the cayenne for yourself, although do put at least a pinch in, as it plays an important role. For Larry, who loves hot spicy foods like me, add a smidge more.
      If you aren’t sleeping well, try one of these:
      Sleepytime tea + 3 Calms Forte
      “Hot almond milk”(this is something I made for my kids when they couldn’t sleep: they loved it and it worked great! Original recipe was milk/almond extract and some brown sugar or honey. For the cleanse, if you are giving up dairy, use unsweetened almond milk/almond extract and trivia: YUM!
      Valerian root
      Rescue Remedy sleep
      Insomnia has so many causes and we will post more on this one at a later date but be sure that your room is completely dark(even the display on the alarm clock can be sleep-disrupting) and try to turn off all electronics at least one hour before you go to sleep.
      Hopefully you will notice some differences at the end and your body will thank you….and you will at least be more aware of the small changes you can make to improve your diet and overall wellness.
      As for your last remark, I am so looking forward to some NY Pizza/full-bodied red wine(a Malbec perhaps?) and hanging with my favorite NY city hosts and cutest dog in Big Apple.

    This is my 2nd time around with this cleanse and it’s so empowering!! This time around I invited the folks in my fitness classes to join me, and I wanna say there are probably 40+ of us doing it! Most have never done anything like this. 2nd time around it’s really not that hard, just intentional. Since my first time (in early Nov.), I have changed my habits and have really stuck with those habits…and have lost 5 lbs and kept them off, I might add! I use truvia in my coffee and oatmeal to give me the sweetness I need, plus I’ve been putting 1/2 of chopped banana in my oatmeal as well. Same breakfast every day…eggs with cheese (sometimes ham) and oatmeal. The other 2 things I changed that I think made a big difference in my body are:
    1. I stopped having cereal…I realized that a bowl of cereal (even Kashi protein cereal) was giving me almost 30 grams of sugar!!! Yikes!
    2. I quit thinking that a meal wasn’t complete if it didn’t have some sort of yummy carb with it! I eat a lot of lean protein and veggies together with no carbs…and that is ok!

    In addition, I love that I don’t have to count calories! I have as many nuts as I want, and when I really need something ‘starchy’, i load up on sweet potatos, quinoa, brown rice or oatmeal…they are really satisfyin!!!

    Thanks again Kyle for introducing this to me…it has changed my body inside and out. A gal who is doing this too (but started on Jan. 2…I started on Jan. 7…day 6 baby!!), she left me a note on my desk at work on Friday that said “Day 9…down 8 lbs, and 1.5% body fat!!” Pretty amazing….thanks again!!

    • Thanks for inviting so many people to join with us: you are an amazing role model and inspiration to all who know you. For those of you who don’t have the pleasure of knowing Marina personally, let me introduce you! Marina is a fitness instructor at Club Sports in Oregon and she also is in charge of many of the group exercise classes there. Taking one of Marina’s class makes exercise fun and challenging. It is obvious that she loves what she does and every class is different, fast-paced and motivating. I am not surprised that she was able to ‘recruit’ so many people to join us on this cleanse: even when she is pushing us to a new level of fitness, she has a smile on her face which reflects her inner joy and balance.
      Before I joined Club Sports with my family 15 years ago, I was not inclined to take an exercise class but would rather run/walk or swim on my own. One day I ventured into one of the classes there(back then it was Body Pump, now known as Group Power): and I have continued trying new classes there whenever I can. I have tried muscle yoga, pilates, Core, Body Flow and a few others; this has made a huge difference in both my fitness level(cardio, flexbility and core strength) and has kept me motivated rather than bored.
      So those of us who are doing the 10 cleanse are learning just how critical it is to pay attention to what we are putting into our mouths. Another important part of the journey towards wellness and balance is exercise so find something that you love and be sure you are staying active as well. Between these 2 components, your body is certain to change and you will love the results!

    Thanks for the post, the motivation, and the ideas! I have really enjoyed this cleanse and plan on making it a lifestyle change in this New Year (adding back in alcohol on some occasions when I’m out with friends, of course!).

    Friday was my first tricky day in Mexico. (Note: I’ve been doing the cleanse but completely vegan, making this outing particularly difficult). A group of us went out to a taco place and I thought “holy s***, tacos = meat! what in the sam heck do I eat?” Luckily, they had a sauteed vegetarian dish, alambre, so it worked out just fine! Other than that, I’ve been cooking on my own, largely last weekend and this one because I don’t have a lot of time to do so during the school week. Here are a few recipes I have found and used (including one from “Whole Living”‘s cleanse!):

    1. Roasted Garlic and Beet Soup (I just made this one and it is delicious!). Here’s the link so I don’t take up too much space!

    From Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s “Eat to Live”
    2. Balsamic Vinaigrette – this is delicious!

    1/2 c. water
    1/4 c. plus 2 TBSP roasted garlic rice vinegar
    2 TBSP olive oil
    1/4 c. balsamic vinegar
    1/4 c. 100% grape fruit spread or raisins (I used raisins, the spread was impossible to find!)
    4 cloves garlic, pressed
    1 tsp. dried oregano
    1/2 tsp. dried basil
    1/2 tsp. onion powder

    Blend all the ingredients in a food processor or high-powered blender until smooth and creamy

    3. Dijon Date Dressing/Dip

    1c. water
    1/3 cup raw cashew butter or 2/3 cup raw cashews (I substituted with walnuts)
    4 TBSP balsamic vinegar
    2 TBSP no-salt seasoning
    2 TBSP Dijon mustard
    4 – 6 dates, pitted
    1 – 2 cloves garlic, minced

    Blend all the ingredients in a food processor or high-powered blender until smooth and creamy.

    4. Walnut – Pear Green Salad

    8 oz. (5 cups) baby greens
    2 oz. (2 cups) arugula or watercress
    1 pear, peeled, cored, and grated
    1/4 cup dried currants
    1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
    2 TBSP rice vinegar
    2 tsp. olive oil
    2 pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
    1/4 c. walnut halves

    Combine the baby greens, arugula, grated pear, currants, and walnuts in a bowl. Toss with the vinegar and olive oil (I used the balsamic vinaigrette I made instead – sooo good!). Top with the sliced pears and walnut halves.

    5. Eat Your Greens Fruit Smoothie

    5 oz. baby spinach (I also use Swiss chard)
    1 banana
    1 c. frozen blueberries (or other frozen berries, ie strawberries, blackberries)
    1/2 c. unsweetened soy, hemp, or almond milk
    1/2 c. pomegranate juice or other unsweetened fruit juice (I can’t find anything unsweetened in Mexico and my budget doesn’t yet permit a juicer, so I just use another 1/2 c. of milk)
    1 TBSP ground flaxseeds
    *I also add in nutmeg, ground cloves, and cinnamon for a delicious, well-rounded taste!

    Blend all the ingredients in a high-powered blender until smooth and creamy.

    This week, I am also making a Chickpea Curry Stew recipe that is a mix between a few recipes I found online, as well as the steamed vegetables with balsamic vinegar dressing that was on Whole Foods, and another vegetable casserole that I found online; trying to cook in the slow cooker to make my life easier!

    I’m so glad I jumped in on the cleanse! I’ve been feeling great and while the first week of school has taken some re-adjustment and not as much sleep as I need, the energy I get from the food I eat has made all the difference. I didn’t weigh myself at the beginning of the cleanse, but between Thursday evening and this morning, I was down 3 pounds! And like one of the comments you shared, it is really empowering for me to cook my own food and know that I’m treating my body with the love and respect it deserves. I also started to go back to the gym this week: Total Body Conditioning on Tuesday/Thursday, FitDance on Saturday, and Yoga this morning. Getting back into the groove feels great 🙂

    • Thanks for sharing all of those wonderful recipes and your enthusiasm Maggie. It sounds as though you are really following Fuhrman’s philosophy in “Eat to live”, which is a terrific book and follows some basic whole foods living guidelines. I am definitely going to try the vinaigrette and roasted beet soup recipes. I love having new “go-to” recipes because it makes it that much easier to eat well. I keep a small ,very worn book of my favorite recipes in the kitchen(next to my collection of ‘real cookbooks’: remember, this is one of my addictions !!) and I always look it over when I need some inspiration for dinner or a party. I know that all of the recipes in my little book are foolproof and yummy.
      And Maggie, it sounds as though you are well on your way to balanced eating and living. A votre sante!!

    Yes, shopping for whole fresh foods and finding new ways to prepare them that optimize the health benefits is the only way to go…many thousand thanks to you who’ve posted great recipes, can’t wait to try some of them out…Soups like the garlic beet recipe provided by Maggie are a perfect way to ease out of the cleanse and into sustained healthy eating…as for me, I am happily over caffeine and have followed the consciousness cleanse this week to prepare for my segueway into the ‘master cleanse,’ a well-known detox juicing regime that my hubby and I do every year at this time, we start tomorrow! Meanwhile, I will be cheering all of you on to your last few days on the cleanse…sounds like everyone has gotten some newfound benefit….I for one have stopped running around as much… hitting the New Years sales has absolutely no appeal….I’d much rather be spending my precious time taking better care of myself, drinking “golden elixir” concoction or garlic beet soup….this is what a consciousness cleanse can do…not only help get our eating habits, but our priorities in balance!
